Turtles Coming Out of Hibernation: A Must-Read for Beginners! The 3 Keys to Environment, First Feeding, and Sunbathing

Hello everyone, recently a lot of folks have been asking questions about turtles coming out of hibernation: When should they leave their hibernation environment? When should I start feeding them? Can they sunbathe? So, I might as well address these questions specifically. Without further ado, let’s get straight to the practical tips.

How to Determine When a Turtle Should Leave its Hibernation Environment

Handling Substrate Hibernation

First, let’s talk about when to remove them from the hibernation environment. If you’re using a substrate like a water-retaining agent, mud, coco coir, moss, etc., for hibernation, check the weather forecast for the next half a month. Sometimes, a single hot day will cause some turtles to wake up and start thrashing about in their hibernation environment. If this is just an occasional temperature spike and it will cool down again soon, then you don’t need to do anything. Let them be; they will go back to sleep once the weather turns cold again. You just need to maintain the hibernation environment as usual, like adding water, cleaning, and so on. When the high temperature frequently reaches 20°C and temperature fluctuations no longer drop to a level that would induce dormancy, then it’s time to remove them from the hibernation environment.

Move the turtle to its normal keeping environment, but the water should be a bit shallower, and you shouldn’t set up a basking platform out of the water yet.

Handling Shallow-Water Hibernation

If the turtle is hibernating in shallow water, it’s even simpler. Just four words: “Stay put.”Turtles in shallow-water hibernation sleep more lightly and may only be dormant during the coldest period. The concept of coming out of hibernation is relatively vague for them; you just need to wait until it’s time for their first feeding.

The Scientific Method for the First Feeding of a Turtle Just Out of Hibernation

Next is when to start feeding. Again, look at the temperature. When the high temperature is consistently above 20°C, you can try the first feeding in the morning as it warms up.

The Principle of Gradual Feeding

For the first feeding, offer only 1 turtle pellet. This allows the turtle’s digestive system, which has been inactive all winter, to get used to the feeling of digesting food again. Afterwards, stop feeding for 3 to 5 days. For the second meal, you can increase the amount by 1 to 2 pellets as appropriate. For subsequent feedings, gradually increase the amount as the temperature rises.

Do not feed them every day at the beginning, and avoid rich or heavy foods, or foods with hard shells that are difficult to digest. If a drop in temperature is forecasted, you must stop feeding at least 3 days before it gets colder. When the low temperature also stays around 20°C, you can fully transition to the normal feeding routine.

For Turtle Illnesses, Prevention is Better Than Cure

I know some friends are very dismissive of my approach:

What’s with all the fuss? I feed my turtle whenever it has an appetite, even during hibernation, and I’ve never had a problem.

Indeed, feeding them might not cause any issues. In the wild, no one controls the first feeding for turtles post-hibernation, and we haven’t seen any species go extinct because they got an “upset stomach”after waking up. But the issue is that we are keeping pets, not simulating nature. Prevention is better than cure for turtle illnesses, and once a turtle gets sick, many fellow turtle keepers know firsthand what a hassle that is. Simply feeding based on temperature is a “simple effort” that can prevent many potential hidden dangers. So, why not do it?

Sunbathing Taboos for Turtles Just Out of Hibernation

Finally, let’s talk about whether a turtle that has just come out of hibernation should sunbathe to supplement calcium, kill bacteria, and “relax and get comfortable.” I can only say, absolutely not! The temperature difference caused by sunlight, as well as the stress issues from suddenly being placed in bright light after being in a dark hibernation environment, can be directly fatal to the turtle. During that initial period after waking, you should try to maintain the same dark and quiet atmosphere as during hibernation, allowing the turtle to gradually adapt to the post-hibernation environment.

All of the above is advice from my personal experience. Novice keepers with no experience in this area can use it as a reference and then adjust and optimize based on their own actual situations to form their own unique turtle-keeping methods. For those keepers who already have their own experience, just stick to your own ways. Every keeper’s situation is different, and methods will vary. As long as you are raising the turtle well, there are no fixed rules, which is also part of the fun of turtle keeping.

The sunbathing taboo is a critical point! How long do you recommend maintaining that dark, quiet environment before gradually reintroducing light?

@CriticXThank you for highlighting this crucial point! The article emphasizes a gradual adaptation period. It’s key to observe your turtle for signs of comfort before slowly reintroducing light over several days to minimize stress.
