The Beginning of Hatching, the First Cry of Life (0-3 Days)

First Sight

Taken out of the breeding box just after hatching to reduce the burden on the mother bird, it is covered in “white” fuzz, eyes closed tight, like a pink “little meatball,” trembling with fragility. Its neck can hardly support its head, only able to lean softly on the warm brooding towel (a soft cloth specifically used for wrapping and keeping chicks warm).

The Moving First Cry

Extreme Warmth Preservation

The temperature of the thermostatic brooder box is strictly maintained at 30-35℃ (86-95°F), with humidity around 60%. The hatchling is like a “peeled egg”; losing a constant temperature environment for just a few tens of minutes can be fatal.

Maiden Meal Voyage

Use professional parrot chick formula (such as A21; I use Yinlebao, [but] for zero-day hand-rearing A21 is estimated to be more suitable), strictly follow the instructions to brew with boiling water around 70℃ (158°F) (I am lazy and just use water that has been boiled), and cool to 40℃～50℃ (104°F ~ 122°F) (place on the web of the hand/tiger mouth so it is not scalding, just warm to the touch) before feeding. The amount for the first feed is extremely small, and the formula should be as diluted as possible; only one or two small mouthfuls are needed, ensuring swallowing is smooth. Generally, when the crop (a part of the bird’s digestive system, located at the front of the esophagus, used to temporarily store food) bulges to the size of a small bean, that is about enough.

Gentle Operation

Feeding movements must be gentle; gently hold the little bird in the left hand and hold the spoon or syringe in the right hand (as shown in the picture). You can use a special soft tube or the smallest size syringe (remove the needle) to drip along the corner of the mouth, or you can use a special spoon to feed; stop immediately when you observe the crop slightly bulging. Clean residual milk stains from the corner of the mouth promptly after feeding.

High-Frequency Feeding

Feed every 2-3 hours, including at night! (I am relatively lazy; I stop feeding after one feed at 11:30 PM). Imitate the frequency of parent birds. The crop needs to be basically empty before the next feeding.
