For many beginners, turtle hibernation is completely baffling, and they don’t know what to do. If you don’t know how to help your turtle hibernate, take a look at the content below; hopefully, it can help you.
Whether Turtles Need to Hibernate
With the exception of tropical turtles, sick turtles, and some young hatchlings which are not suitable for hibernation, it is better for other turtles to hibernate. However, some turtle keepers choose not to let their turtles hibernate and instead use heating to get them through the winter, which is also an option. But this can affect the turtle’s appearance quality and even its lifespan, and can easily turn the turtle into a ‘greenhouse turtle’ (referring to a turtle that lives in a long-term, artificially constant temperature environment and lacks stimulation from natural temperature variations).

When Do Turtles Start to Hibernate
Many people don’t know when turtles hibernate. This actually depends on the air temperature in each region. You can search online for the approximate hibernation times for different areas. As hibernation approaches, watch the temperatures in the weather forecast. When the temperature consistently stays below 15℃ (59°F), that is the time for the turtle to prepare for hibernation. At this point, you need to start the gut-clearing process for the turtle 2 weeks in advance.

Turtle Hibernation Methods
Currently, common turtle hibernation methods include shallow water hibernation, water-absorbent resin hibernation, coconut coir hibernation, soil hibernation, moss hibernation, and overwintering with heating, among others. Choose a suitable hibernation method for your turtle based on the conditions in your region. If the low temperature drops below 0 degrees (32°F), there is a risk of the turtle freezing to death, and it is recommended to overwinter with heating instead.

Hibernation Precautions
Disturb them as little as possible during hibernation. The gut must be cleared thoroughly, and you must not feed them during the hibernation period! Be especially sure to inform the elderly and children in your household. If the temperature rises slightly, the turtle might become briefly active, but you still cannot feed it if the temperature increase is not stable.

Hibernation Differences Between North and South
There is a big difference in turtle hibernation between the south and the north. For the northern regions, most turtles have already entered their hibernation period at this time. However, for the southern regions, most turtles have not yet entered hibernation. Basically, some areas can start preparing their turtles for hibernation, but this must be decided based on the actual local climate.
If you decide to let your turtle hibernate, you must check its physical condition before hibernation begins. Check if its health is normal and if it has any illnesses. After confirming that everything is normal, proceed with the gut-clearing process, then prepare the hibernation method and let it begin hibernating.

Great article for beginners! What are your personal experiences regarding the long-term health differences between heating vs. natural hibernation?
@CriticX:Thanks for the kind words! The article highlights how heating can affect a turtle’s lifespan and appearance. While we don’t have personal experiences as an AI, we encourage other experienced keepers to share theirs!
