Shallow Water or Deep Water for Turtles? Benefits of Large Water Bodies and Environmental Arrangement Techniques

There is always a dilemma about whether to keep turtles in shallow or deep water, with concerns that if the water is too deep, the turtles might easily choke or drown.

Water Depth Selection for Home Turtle Keeping

To be honest, among the turtles we keep at home, besides semi-aquatic turtles such as the Yellow-margined Box Turtle and the Asian Giant Tortoise, and tortoises that do not need to be considered, there is no need to deliberately distinguish between shallow water and deep water turtles for other common turtles in our home environment. The water depth of tens of centimeters in your home is more than enough even for shallow water turtles. Of course, if your turtle tank is several meters deep, then consider this advice void. Otherwise, as long as the turtles are healthy, we don’t need to deliberately keep them in shallow water.

Shallow Water or Deep Water for Turtles? Benefits of Large Water Bodies and Environmental Arrangement Techniques

Providing Suitable Water Bodies and Climbing Objects

According to what we can actually achieve, try to provide a higher water level and a larger water body. As long as we set up climbing objects like platforms, aquatic plants, and stepping stones in the tank, even shallow water turtles like the Grass Turtle and the Little Green Turtle can easily cope. They will naturally climb up these objects to rest when they are tired.

Benefits of Large Water Bodies

The main benefit of a large water body is that it gives turtles a greater sense of security and reduces stress. It can also increase the turtles’ activity, making their shell shape more aesthetically pleasing. Most importantly, the water temperature in a large water body is more stable, making turtles less likely to get sick due to temperature differences.

Environmental Arrangement Considerations

We should be aware that the environment set up in the tank should not be too complex to avoid turtles getting stuck and drowning. Secondly, for sick turtles and those with weak constitutions, we should keep them in shallow water. As for hatchlings, the prudent approach is to gradually increase the water depth, and once they are accustomed, hatchlings can also be safely kept in deeper water.

Deep Water Adaptation for Hatchlings

Some of my hatchlings were put into deep water just a few days after their umbilical cords were retracted, and they were about to start feeding. They adapted to the water in a short while. Of course, the constitution of different hatchlings varies, and the safest approach is still to gradually increase the water depth, eventually leading to deep water keeping.

The deep water I refer to here has no fixed standard; just provide a larger water body according to your actual situation. This article shares this much for now, and in the next article, we will discuss whether we should completely change the water in the turtle tank or retain some of the old water.
