When feeding turtles, it is essential to avoid misconceptions. Unlike cats and dogs, turtles do not require three meals a day at set times. If you feed turtles three times a day, it may seem like you are pampering them, but it could actually harm them.

The Fundamental Difference Between Turtles and Dogs

Turtles are ectothermic animals, while dogs are endothermic animals. Therefore, turtles’actual energy expenditure and metabolic rate are not particularly fast. Overfeeding can lead to indigestion and consequently diseases such as gastroenteritis. Frequent feeding can also shorten the turtle’s growth cycle, leading to obesity and rapid growth, which is very detrimental to the turtle’s physical appearance and quality.

The Impact of Temperature on Feeding

The most reliable reference for feeding turtles is the temperature of the breeding environment. In summer, when temperatures are high, it is the best period for turtles’ growth and development. When the environmental temperature is above 25 degrees Celsius, it is possible to feed once a day. For young turtle hatchlings, feeding twice a day can be considered. However, the amount of food per feeding should not be excessive.

Calculating a Turtle’s Food Intake

To calculate a turtle’s food intake, you can start by preparing a small spoon, feed one spoonful, and then add another spoonful after the turtle has finished eating, observing whether it can finish. Although turtles may appear simple, they are not foolish; they can also sense when they are full. If they are truly full, they will stop eating. In this way, we can roughly judge the turtle’s food intake.

Feeding Recommendations for Captive Turtles

However, in captive breeding, it is recommended not to overfeed. Generally, feeding to 60% to 70% of the calculated food intake is sufficient, which is about six to seven tenths full.

Feeding Frequency in Autumn

As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, the feeding frequency can be extended to once every two to three days, which is perfectly acceptable. When feeding turtles, it is better to feed less rather than more; do not worry about the turtles starving.
