Autumn Turtle Enteritis Prevention: 3 Key Care Tips to Help Your Beloved Turtle Get Through Autumn Safely!

As autumn deepens and the temperature difference between day and night grows, it’s once again the peak season for turtle enteritis! Friends in the south might not have noticed it much yet, but it’s a different story in the north. Once a turtle develops enteritis, in mild cases, it may float abnormally, refuse to eat, and have weak limbs; in severe cases, it can be life-threatening—and all of this often stems from failing to adjust our “summer care routine” in time!

Don’t panic. Learn these 3 tips to help your beloved turtle get through this autumn safely.

Adjusting Your Feeding Strategy

Some turtle keepers feed their turtles in both the morning and evening during summer without any issues. But as autumn arrives, nighttime temperatures drop and digestion slows down. Sticking to the old feeding habit is like “planting a time bomb for their digestive system”!

What to do: Halve the food amount, feeding only 1/2 of the summer portion; feed earlier in the day, preferably finishing before noon to avoid cooler periods; and absolutely do not feed at night, leaving a digestive rest period of at least 12 hours.

Water Changing Principles

In summer, changing the water as soon as it gets dirty is fine because turtles excrete waste faster, eating and defecating more. Even if you do a full water change when it’s dirty, it’s less likely to cause problems. However, in autumn, frequent water changes lead to large water temperature fluctuations → turtle stress response (referring to a series of non-specific physiological reactions of an organism to external stimuli) → digestive upset!

What to do: See waste? Just remove it with a siphon (a tool for cleaning debris from the aquarium bottom) instead of doing a full tank change. Reduce the frequency of water changes, replacing only 1/3 or 1/2 of the water each time, and ensure the new water has been left to sit out until it reaches roughly the same temperature as the original water. Maintaining stable water quality is more important than achieving a so-called “sterile” environment!

Proactive Intestinal Care

A turtle’s digestive system is actually very fragile. When the temperature drops, the activity of digestive enzymes decreases—it needs to be boosted with external aid!

What to do: You can pre-soak turtle food to soften it (to prevent it from expanding by absorbing water in the intestines). You can also consider adding pet probiotics (like Mamiai, a children’s probiotic brand, or turtle-specific probiotics), following the dosage instructions or using about 0.1 grams per 100 grams of the turtle’s weight. If you find this troublesome, you can directly opt for “probiotic-enriched turtle food”—feeding and protecting the intestines at the same time, a “must-have for the lazy keeper”! All these methods are viable. However, they are not strictly necessary, but rather serve as “an extra precaution.”

Extra Reminders

If your turtle is already showing signs of floating, listlessness, and refusal to eat, immediately stop feeding and raise the temperature to 28°C (82.4°F) for it to rest quietly. If there’s no improvement in 2-3 days, you will need to try medication!

In southern regions, the day-night temperature difference is also starting to increase. If you plan to use heating for the winter, use an aquarium heater to maintain the water temperature above 26°C (78.8°F) (but be sure to raise the temperature slowly to avoid a stress response).

Raising turtles in autumn isn’t about “relying on luck”; it’s about “depending on details”! Adjusting feeding + stabilizing water quality + boosting with probiotics—by applying these 3 tips together, you can keep your little turtle away from enteritis and help it healthily fatten up for the winter!
