Temperament and Interaction

Unlike common pet turtles on the market, the Yellow-margined Box Turtle is a National Class II Protected Animal in China. To purchase one, the seller must provide the necessary permits and a breeding identification card for legal keeping; otherwise, one would face certain legal risks.

Of course, the main reason is its persistently high market price. Other popular species like the Yellow-throated turtle or the Chinese stripe-necked turtle cost only a few dozen to 100 RMB, with cheaper ones even going for 10 RMB for a batch. In contrast, the price of a Yellow-margined Box Turtle—ranging from a few hundred RMB for a Taiwan subspecies to a four-figure price in RMB for an Anhui subspecies—deters most turtle keepers.
