A Must-Read for Musk Turtle Keepers: Swimming Ability and Cohabitation Notes for the Helmeted Mud Turtle

Get to know a turtle a day. Today, we’re introducing the Helmeted Mud Turtle, which has recently become extremely popular in the musk turtle market and has garnered widespread attention from keepers.

Appearance of the Helmeted Mud Turtle

First, as is customary, a brief introduction to the appearance of the Helmeted Mud Turtle. Although it is a mud turtle, it is often referred to as the Helmeted Musk Turtle in the market. It is small in size, with adults typically measuring 12-15 cm. The carapace is streamlined and usually light yellow, resembling a cyclist’s helmet, which is how it got its name. Its plastron is a natural wood color and has a hinge that can be closed for protection. The head pattern is magnificent, with thick yellow lines interspersed with fine spots distributed on the top and sides of the head.

Keeping Difficulty and Swimming Ability

The Helmeted Mud Turtle perfectly meets the criteria for musk turtle keepers: it’s exquisite and small, requiring only a desktop tank for housing. Both its shape and head pattern have potential for selective breeding and development. Moreover, its keeping difficulty is considered easy among musk turtles, with no strict requirements for water quality. However, it’s important to note that, unlike other common musk turtles, the Helmeted Mud Turtle’s swimming ability is on the weaker side. It is a prime example of a species where the water level should not exceed twice the height of its carapace. Some new keepers might mistakenly assume that the Helmeted Mud Turtle can be kept in deep water like Musk Turtles or Razor-backed Musk Turtles, only to find their beloved turtle floating on the water’s surface the next day.

Temperament and Cohabitation Notes

However, this species is a classic example of one prone to infighting. When kept with its own kind, situations like competing for food and mutual biting will occur. They have an aggressive temperament, and Helmeted Mud Turtles also possess a degree of territorial awareness. If there are two male Helmeted Mud Turtles in a tank, you’ll likely see them fighting all the way from one side to the other. In a group with more females than males, a scenario where the females gang up on the male may also occur. Female turtles naturally develop faster and grow larger than males. But this also means the Helmeted Mud Turtle has high ornamental and interactive value. After all, how can a turtle that barely moves capture a keeper’s attention?

Market Price and Investment Potential

Furthermore, the market price for the Helmeted Mud Turtle is quite affordable. In previous years and this year, its price has been on par with the Razor-backed Musk Turtle, available for around 220 CNY. However, influenced by the booming market for the Narrow-bridged Musk Turtle, the prices for many musk turtles have risen accordingly. Many breeders’ hatchlings were bought up in bulk even before they had hatched, causing the price of the few Helmeted Mud Turtle hatchlings that made it to the market to gradually increase after late September. Standard grade hatchlings are already approaching the 300 CNY price point, while selectively bred, high-quality specimens range from 500 to 1000 CNY.

At the same time, as the musk turtle market continues to boom, the Helmeted Mud Turtle has naturally entered the sights of investors due to its many similarities with the Narrow-bridged Musk Turtle. The purchase price for Narrow-bridged Musk Turtles is very high, whereas the cost of Helmeted Mud Turtles is relatively low, sparking breeding interest among many individual keepers. Lao Wu reminds interested individual keepers that because the Helmeted Mud Turtle’s poor swimming ability prevents it from being kept in high water levels, a breeding group requires a slightly larger space. This helps to prevent females from ganging up on the male, which could later cause the male to be afraid to mount them. It is recommended to house the male separately and only cohabitate them when there are signs of mating intent.

I’m curious about specific tank setups for their weaker swimming. Any creative ideas for shallow water environments?

@CriticXThanks for your question, CriticX! You’re right, shallow water is key for Helmeted Mud Turtles. Keepers often use driftwood, rocks, or large flat pebbles to create basking and resting spots near the surface, keeping water depth low. We encourage others to share their creative setups too!
