As turtle keepers know, the painful moment of losing a beloved pet is an almost inevitable part of the journey. Whether due to illness, sudden environmental changes, or other accidents, we can often gradually persuade ourselves to accept the reality and come to terms with the outcome. However, there is one cause of death that is particularly hard to accept—drowning.

Does this feel familiar? Your turtle was doing just fine, and then suddenly, it drowns. It happens without any warning, and all the emotional investment vanishes into thin air. It’s a heartbreaking experience for any owner.

Drowning: A Surprisingly Common Cause of Death in Turtles? Learn This 6-Step First Aid to Prevent a Heartbreaking Loss

You might be thinking, “Aren’t turtles natural swimmers? How could they possibly drown?”

In fact, drowning in turtles is not uncommon. Here are several common reasons:

  • High water levels without a basking platform: Turtles need a place where they can stand firmly and breathe at all times. If the water is too deep and there’s no resting spot, they may drown from physical exhaustion.
  • Overly strong water pump suction: Small or weak turtles, in particular, can get stuck to a filter pump and be unable to break free. While not extremely common, such incidents are not unheard of. A pump with appropriate power is essential; an overpowered one can be a main culprit.
  • Excessive tank decorations: If aquatic plants, driftwood, and other items are too dense, a turtle can become entangled or trapped, preventing it from surfacing for air.
  • Poor health condition of the turtle: A sick, weak, or newly acquired turtle that has not yet acclimated will have reduced strength and slower reactions, making it more susceptible to accidents.

How to Prevent Your Turtle from Drowning

Here are some methods to prevent your turtle from drowning:

  • Introduce new turtles to water with caution: The water level should ideally be 2-3 times the height of the turtle’s shell, and it is crucial to provide a basking dock or a stepping stone.
  • Pay attention to how you place the turtle in the water: Never drop it in head-first. Allow it to crawl in naturally or place it gently and horizontally to avoid it choking on water.
  • Monitor your turtle’s health: If you notice your turtle is listless, inactive, or not eating, immediately lower the water level and consider isolating it for observation.
  • Regularly check the habitat’s safety: Ensure the water pump’s power is appropriate and that decorations do not pose potential traps.

First Aid for a Drowning Turtle

If your turtle unfortunately appears to have drowned, stay calm! Remember the following 6 first-aid steps to maximize the chances of saving your beloved pet:

  1. Quickly remove and tilt to drain water.
Immediately take the turtle out of the water and hold it in a 45-degree tilted position, with its head down and tail up, to prevent more water from entering its lungs.
  2. Gently drain water and check for response.
Gently pull its limbs to see if there is any reaction; you can also try to squeeze water out of its lungs. Then, secure its head and gently rock its body while moderately compressing the carapace to help expel water from the lungs.
  3. Apply pressure to the carapace and plastron to expel remaining water.
Rhythmically apply gentle pressure to the carapace (top shell) and plastron (bottom shell) to simulate the effect of chest compressions in artificial respiration, encouraging water to flow out from the mouth and nose.
  4. Administer artificial respiration by blowing into its nose and mouth.
Straighten the turtle’s neck and blow gently into its mouth and nostrils (be careful not to blow too forcefully). Do this once every 5 seconds for at least 10 minutes to help restore breathing.
  5. Observe through dry-docking after recovery.
If the turtle begins to regain consciousness, immediately transfer it to a dry container (dry-docking) for at least 24 hours. Keep the environment warm to prevent a secondary drowning incident or a respiratory infection.
  6. Seek immediate veterinary care or continue observation.
If possible, contact a veterinarian as soon as you can. If veterinary care is unavailable, continue to keep the turtle warm and monitor its breathing and activity levels for follow-up care. However, most veterinary clinics near me don’t treat reptile pets, so I couldn’t find help even if I wanted to pay for it.

Please note: The success rate of this first aid is not 100%. If the turtle is discovered too late or already shows no vital signs, the chances of revival are slim. What we can do is remain calm and react swiftly when an accident occurs, giving our beloved turtle one more chance at survival.

Keeping a turtle is a responsibility and, more importantly, a form of companionship. May your turtles all grow up healthy and stay with you for a long, long time.
