As we enter late autumn and winter approaches, temperatures are steadily dropping. In northern regions, most turtles have already begun to hibernate. However, in many southern areas, the season hasn’t fully shifted; daytime temperatures can be relatively high while nights are cool, creating a significant diurnal temperature variation. For turtles in these areas, it doesn’t seem to be time for hibernation just yet.

Late Autumn Turtle Feeding and Hibernation Preparation

Feeding turtles in late autumn should follow the principle of gut cleansing combined with maintenance feeding. This prepares them for the upcoming hibernation, as summer feeding methods are no longer suitable at this time.

Three Key Feeding Mistakes to Avoid

During this period, you should adhere to three main rules when feeding your turtle: do not feed portions that are too large or too frequent; do not feed in the afternoon or at night; and do not feed foods that are difficult to digest.

Avoid Excessive and Frequent Feeding

During late autumn, it is not advisable to give your turtle a large amount of food at once or to feed it multiple times a day.

The primary goal of feeding in late autumn is gut cleansing, supplemented by maintenance feeding. Therefore, it’s best to feed your turtle once every 2-3 days, offering small portions of turtle pellets. Overfeeding is not recommended.

Choose the Right Feeding Time

In late autumn, you should avoid feeding your turtle anything in the afternoon or at night. It is recommended to complete feeding in the morning or before noon, as this allows the turtle ample time to properly digest its food.

Avoid Hard-to-Digest Foods

During this period, it is best to avoid feeding various types of meat. Sticking to easily digestible turtle pellets is sufficient. There is no need to worry about nutritional deficiencies, as modern turtle pellets are formulated to be nutritionally complete.

Other Pre-Hibernation Preparations

Proper feeding in late autumn is crucial and requires careful attention, as all these efforts are made to prepare the turtle for hibernation. In addition to feeding, you can also soak your turtle in warm water on days when the temperature is high. This helps stimulate defecation. It is vital to ensure the turtle’s gut is completely empty before hibernation, which can be confirmed by observing its waste.

Most importantly, you must observe your turtle’s condition for any signs of illness. This is because a sick turtle cannot hibernate and requires a heated environment with continued feeding. The feeding advice mentioned above is suitable for hibernating turtles such as the Yellow-margined box turtle, Chinese stripe-necked turtle, Reeves’ turtle, and snapping turtles. It is not applicable to tropical turtles, which require heating to survive the winter.
