Attention, fellow turtle keepers (a term for turtle enthusiasts)! Winter is just around the corner. As temperatures continue to drop in the north, it’s time for the most critical preparation stage before turtle hibernation—clearing the gut! However, we turtle keepers in the south can probably continue happily feeding our turtles for a while longer and likely won’t need to start preparing for the gut cleaning until November.
This is of utmost importance in determining whether your beloved turtle can safely get through the winter, so you absolutely cannot be careless!
The Necessity of Clearing the Gut
Why clear the gut? It’s a life-saving key step!
Imagine if a turtle enters hibernation with a full stomach. In a low-temperature environment, this food will ferment and rot in the intestinal tract. In mild cases, this can cause enteritis; in severe cases, it can directly threaten their life. Therefore, how thoroughly the gut cleaning is done directly affects whether the turtle can safely get through the entire winter.
The Best Time to Clear the Gut
When the water temperature consistently stays below 18-20°C, it is the best time to start clearing the gut. At this point, you will notice that your turtle’s activity level significantly decreases and its appetite becomes poor; these are natural signals from its body.
3 Major Steps for Clearing the Gut

Stop Feeding
Once the water temperature is stable below 18°C, please stop feeding any food immediately. Many turtle keepers feel sorry for their turtles and always want to give them one last meal, but this practice is actually very dangerous!
Warm Water Soaks
This is the most skillful step and also a high-risk one that is debated among many turtle keepers! Soak the turtle in warm water that is slightly higher than the ambient temperature (20-25°C), once daily or every other day, for 20-30 minutes each time. Remember:
- The water temperature should not be too high to avoid causing a cold due to a large temperature difference;
- The frequency should not be too high; give the turtle adequate rest time;
- Warm water can effectively stimulate intestinal peristalsis and promote defecation.

Observe the Defecation Status
This is the core step to check if the gut cleaning has been successful! You need to carefully observe the feces your turtle expels:
Sign of Success
Initially: Solid food residue. When the feces turn into transparent or white flocculent matter, congratulations! It means the intestinal tract is almost completely empty.
The entire process usually takes 1 to 3 weeks. Please be patient and complete it thoroughly.
A thorough gut cleaning is the most reliable safeguard for your turtle’s hibernation. For the health of your beloved turtle, start taking action now based on your local temperature!
Don’t be afraid that your turtle will starve; this is also a rest period for its digestive system, allowing it to feast heartily again next year.
