For those of us who are “fated,” when the temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius, it means we need to stop feeding the turtles; and when the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius, it’s time to prepare for our beloved turtles to enter hibernation. Today’s article will teach everyone how to properly let Yellow-margined Box Turtles hibernate, so remember to like and bookmark in a timely manner!

Firstly, to ensure a smooth hibernation for Yellow-margined Box Turtles, the materials we need to prepare include coconut brick, Chilean moss, and a suitable container.
Step one, we need to place the coconut brick and Sphagnum moss in a basin, add boiling water to soak them, and you can add an appropriate amount of Povidone-iodine or potassium permanganate. The purpose of this is to sterilize and disinfect. Next, wait quietly until the moss and coconut brick are fully soaked.

Step two, after the coconut brick and Sphagnum moss are fully soaked and cooled, wring them out until no more water drips. The coconut brick can effectively maintain humidity during the turtle’s hibernation period, while the Sphagnum moss, in addition to providing a loose and breathable environment, further enhances the coconut brick’s moisture-retaining effect. The combination of coconut brick and Sphagnum moss can largely maintain the environment’s humidity, improve air permeability, thus making the turtle safer and more comfortable throughout the entire hibernation process.
Step three, rinse our turtle thoroughly and then apply antifungal shell oil. There is a prerequisite here: the turtle must be in a state of having cleared its intestines and being healthy. If the turtle has not cleared its intestines, the food in its stomach may spoil and rot during the entire hibernation period, which can easily lead to enteritis or even death. Therefore, turtle enthusiasts need to pay special attention that the turtle must undergo intestinal purging a month in advance.

Step four, simply place the turtle in the box. The entire hibernation environment should be placed in a dark, sun-free, and well-ventilated place. In addition, the box must have sufficient ventilation holes.
Well, this is the hibernation method I use for Yellow-margined Box Turtles every year. After personal testing, the effect is good and the operation is convenient. Have you learned it? Remember to like and follow!
