Everyone knows that raising hatchling turtles in winter can be quite challenging. The cold weather and unstable temperatures make the first winter after bringing them home crucial, regardless of whether they are head hatchlings, tail hatchlings, wet hatchlings, or dry hatchlings. I have experienced the painful lesson of losing seven hatchlings to sudden death within a week.
Now, I raise my hatchling turtles in an insulated box, which has proven to be very effective. There have been no more deaths due to environmental temperature changes. Especially the tail hatchlings purchased after the weather turned cold, they are growing well, active, eating and drinking well, and in good health. Sometimes I think, rather than spending money on turtle tanks, heating rods, and filters, which can cost several hundred yuan, it is more cost-effective to simply buy an insulated box.

The insulated box I use has dimensions of 40*30*30 cm and is equipped with an intelligent temperature control system. With the addition of a heating lamp and a basking lamp, the total cost is less than 200 yuan. This insulated box does not require much space, and when paired with a plastic box that costs a few yuan each, it is very suitable for raising five to eight hatchling turtles. Regular water changes are all that is needed. The temperature inside the insulated box is stable, maintaining a long-term temperature of 28 to 29 degrees Celsius, equivalent to a small greenhouse. Feeding them every two days and changing the water every five days can greatly improve the survival rate of the hatchlings.
For example, if we live in an extremely harsh environment, such as a large desert or Gobi, even living in a luxury villa may not make life better because the overall environment is not suitable for survival. Conversely, if we live in a city with beautiful scenery and a pleasant climate, even living in a small house can be very comfortable. This is the same principle as raising hatchling turtles. We always emphasize that raising turtles is about raising their environment. In winter, the insulated box provides a suitable and stable living environment, and we can easily raise the hatchlings with the simplest breeding methods.
Well, that’s all for today. If you find this helpful, welcome to like, follow, and share.
