What to Do When Your Dog Relieves Itself Everywhere? One Method to Train It to Use a Designated Spot in 3 Days

One of my clients once bought a dog, but because of its indiscriminate urination and defecation, the whole family opposed keeping it, and they had no choice but to give it away. Now, however, they wish to have a dog again but are too afraid to do so. I want to tell everyone that training your dog to use a designated spot for elimination is very simple and easy to teach. However, you must pay special attention to the dog’s first time. If your dog does not have a fixed spot at home for relieving itself—one day on the balcony, the next in the bathroom, and the day after in the living room—the dog will have no way to determine where it should urinate. This will inevitably lead to indiscriminate urination and defecation. Therefore, we need to establish a designated spot for the dog.

How to Establish a Fixed Elimination Spot for Your Dog?

Using Urine Pads Infused with Urine-Attractant Molecules

First, it is recommended to prepare urine pads infused with urine-attractant molecules. These pads have a special scent that, once sniffed by the dog, will automatically trigger the desire to eliminate. The dog will urinate on the pad, thereby covering up the odor on it. Ordinary urine pads can also be used, as long as you ensure—through human intervention—that the dog consistently uses the pad for elimination for 3 days, so that a habit is formed.

Gradually Acclimating Your Dog to a Fixed Location

After your dog has developed the habit of eliminating on the urine pad, you can gradually guide it to a designated location:

  • If you want your dog to use a dog toilet: Place the urine pad inside the dog toilet, and the dog will eventually get used to eliminating there.
  • If you want your dog to use the balcony: Place the urine pad on the balcony, and the dog will naturally start to use the balcony as its toilet.

Most importantly, it makes cleaning very convenient. After your dog urinates or defecates, simply bag it up and dispose of it—your hands will remain clean.

Why Can’t Dogs Use a Designated Spot for Elimination?

“The reason your dog isn’t using a designated spot for elimination is that you haven’t told it where to pee.”

Dogs aren’t born knowing where to relieve themselves; they need clear guidance. Raising a dog requires dedication, and if you train patiently, your dog will quickly learn to use a designated spot for elimination.

This is so helpful! I’m curious, what’s the best way to handle accidents *during* the 3-day training period?

@CriticXThanks for your question! Handling accidents during the 3-day training is crucial. If an accident occurs, clean the spot immediately and thoroughly to remove odors. Then, gently guide your dog to the designated area. Consistency and positive reinforcement for using the correct spot are key to success.
