Are you still struggling with choosing the right size for a water turtle tank? The market is filled with a dazzling array of tanks in various sizes. Which one is truly the most suitable for your little turtle? Some fellow turtle keepers say that the golden height for a water turtle tank is 28 cm!

Why 28 Centimeters?

A height of 28 cm provides ample space for water turtles to move freely. Whether swimming, climbing, or basking, they can do so with ease, avoiding the sense of confinement that comes with a small space.

The water depth is just right. Water turtles need an environment with both water and land. A height of 28 cm can easily accommodate a water depth of 10-15 cm, meeting the turtle’s swimming needs while leaving enough land space. As we know, a tank that is too low will certainly not have deep water; a tank that is too high is “a real hassle” for us keepers, whether for changing water or feeding.

It allows for easy observation and strong interactivity. A height of 28 cm makes it convenient for you to observe your water turtle’s every move, stay informed about the turtle’s health condition, and also interact better with your turtle to strengthen the bond.

It saves space and is aesthetically pleasing. Compared to taller tanks, a height of 28 cm saves more vertical space, making it suitable for home keeping. At the same time, it can blend better with the home environment and is aesthetically pleasing and elegant.

Besides Height, What Else Should You Consider for a Tank?

Material Safety

Choose non-toxic and harmless materials, such as glass, acrylic (plexiglass), etc. Avoid using low-quality plastics to prevent harmful substances from endangering the health of your water turtle.

Of course, horizontal space also needs to be considered. The minimum length should be 5 times the turtle’s body length, and the width should be about 3 times the turtle’s body length. In reality, many of us turtle keepers cannot achieve this amount of activity space due to limited room, but at the very least, the turtle should be able to turn around freely and have space to move and a basking area.

As for the height, around 28 cm might be just right, but for some large-sized turtles, this height is not enough.
