When your cat vomits, the very first thing to distinguish is whether it’s regurgitation or actual vomiting. In regurgitation, you will not see any abdominal contractions. Conversely, when a cat vomits, the abdominal contractions are clearly visible.

If what’s expelled is easily digestible kibble, the cause may be that your cat ate too quickly, drank very cold water, or you recently switched its food. In such cases, you can use a seven-day gradual diet transition, or switch to a single-protein, hypoallergenic cat food.

If it’s partially digested kibble, it’s most likely due to indigestion or a food allergy. In this situation, withhold food for 6–8 hours, then offer staple wet food or other easily digestible options.

Different Types of Vomit and How to Respond

1. White Foam (Gastric Juice)

If your cat is vomiting white foam, that is gastric juice. If your cat’s general condition is otherwise normal, it usually means it’s been without food for too long, and excess gastric juice has built up. In this case, simply offer some kibble or wet food.

2. Yellow Foam (Containing Bile)

Yellow foam indicates the presence of bile. You may try a light fasting regimen. If vomiting persists, administer omeprazole at 0.5 mg per kg body weight.

3. Foreign Objects

If your cat vomits non-food items—such as yarn, tissue paper, or hair—you should take it to the clinic for X-rays and further examination, since you can’t be sure whether any fragments remain in the stomach.

4. Hairballs

If what’s expelled is a hairball, it indicates your cat’s stomach is overly packed with fur. You can give it a hairball remedy, psyllium husk powder, or cat grass (wheatgrass) to help pass the hair through the digestive tract.

5. White Foam with Black Specks

If the foam is white but contains black specks, pay close attention. Recall how long it’s been since your cat last received its deworming treatment. If your cat actually vomits worms, it indicates a severe internal parasite infestation.

The above methods are shared for dealing with cat vomiting; I hope they help you! If you have any other questions about your cat’s health, feel free to join the discussion!

What a clear and practical guide! I often worry about my cat’s digestion. Beyond these tips, are there any other general signs that definitely mean a vet visit is needed?

@CriticXThank you for your feedback! Beyond the specific situations mentioned, immediate vet attention is crucial if your cat shows severe lethargy, dehydration, persistent vomiting (over 24 hours), abdominal pain, or if you notice blood in their vomit. Always err on the side of caution for your pet’s health.
