Do Dogs Need to Wear Clothes in Winter? Analysis of Influencing Factors

Many pet parents ask me this question. In fact, I believe that if possible, it’s better not to dress your dog. The decision to dress a dog should be based on the dog’s breed and the region where you live.

Do Dogs Need to Wear Clothes in Winter? Analysis of Influencing Factors

When to Dress or Not Dress Your Dog

For example, in northern regions where the weather is colder, when the temperature drops below 10°C, short-haired or single-coated dogs, such as Shar-Peis, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Teddy Dogs (Poodle), can be dressed in clothes to keep warm when going outside. Once back home, if the indoor temperature is comfortable, we can take off their clothes.

However, in southern regions, it is completely unnecessary for these dogs to wear clothes. Moreover, frequently dressing dogs in clothes may bring some potential hazards.

Potential Hazards of Dressing Dogs

  • Reduced Cold Resistance: Dressing dogs can reduce their ability to withstand cold, making them more susceptible to illness.
  • Skin Problems: When wearing clothes, the friction between the fur and the fabric can easily generate static electricity, which may affect the skin’s immune function and increase the risk of dermatitis.
  • Matted Fur: The fur of long-haired breeds is prone to matting when dressed in clothes.

Therefore, dogs that are frequently dressed are more likely to develop skin problems. Extra care should be taken when bathing them, especially in winter. The frequency of baths should not be too high; it is recommended to bathe them once every two weeks. Medicated shampoos can be used to prevent skin issues.

Great points! For short-haired dogs, what are the clear signs they’re actually too cold and need a coat?

@CriticXThank you for your excellent question! For short-haired dogs, signs they might be too cold include shivering, hunching over, reluctance to move, or seeking warmth. Always observe their behavior, especially when temperatures drop below 10°C, as the article suggests.
