Nobody knows which genius first claimed that “bettas need a bed to sleep,” but once the idea surfaced, countless clickbait accounts began sharing it wildly. As a result, nearly every beginner who starts keeping bettas now owns one of these so-called “betta beds.” But do you really know what it means when a betta lies on it?
First of all, of course bettas sleep. When the surroundings grow dim, they enter a sleep state. A healthy betta will rest in a natural posture in a corner of the tank—it will not lie flat, nor will it close its eyes (in fact, it can’t close them). “Fish farms in Thailand raise anywhere from thousands to hundreds of thousands of these fish. If you needed a bed for each one to sleep, it would sound utterly ridiculous.”

Why Do Bettas “Lie on the Bed”?
You might ask, why do some fish lie on a leaf both day and night? There are two main reasons.
Reason One: Environmental Stress
The first reason is environmental stress—they want to escape the water conditions.
- Either the water quality is too poor,
- Or there is something in the tank that makes them feel threatened.
For example, when you house multiple bettas together, or keep them with other aggressive species in the same tank.
Although bettas are territorial and aggressive, they’re not foolish—if they can’t win, they’ll flee.
Anyone who has bred bettas knows that during breeding, some females get bullied by males so badly that they hide or leap onto leaves—and some even jump out of the tank.

Reason Two: Illness
The second reason is illness—about eighty to ninety percent of bettas lying on leaves are sick.
Common diseases include:
| Disease | Symptoms |
|---|---|
| Whitespot disease | Gill damage, difficulty breathing |
| Saprolegniasis | Scale rot, lethargy |
| Ich (white spot) | Whitish spots on skin, low activity |
At advanced stages, these diseases damage the fish’s gills, causing respiratory distress. To compensate, they must go to areas closer to the surface to access more oxygen.

Do Bettas Really Need a “Bed”?
In summary, healthy bettas do not need any so-called “betta bed,” and unhealthy bettas certainly aren’t helped by one. So don’t worry if your fish doesn’t lie on it to sleep.

Great post, I really appreciate you debunking this myth! What other subtle signs indicate a betta is stressed or unwell, beyond lying down?
@CriticX:Thanks for your kind words! Beyond lying down, subtle signs of betta stress or illness can include hiding, darting, dull colors, clamped fins, lack of appetite, or rapid gill movement. Always observe their overall behavior and appearance.
