Essential Guide for Adopting a Stray Cat: How to Prevent Feline AIDS and Feline Panleukopenia

If you are preparing to adopt a stray cat, this guide is a must-read.

Health Checkups and Health Issues

  1. Stray Cats Often Carry Bacteria and Parasites
Stray cats live outdoors year-round, and their living conditions are typically poor, far from the cleanliness of a home. Therefore, they may carry bacteria and parasites in their bodies. Before bringing a stray cat into your home, I recommend taking it to the vet for a health checkup.
  2. Prevent Feline Panleukopenia and Feline AIDS
If you already have resident cats at home, never bring in a cat that has not undergone a health check. Such cats may be infected with feline panleukopenia, fungal infections, or fleas, which are minor concerns. However, my biggest concern is that stray cats have a high likelihood of being infected with feline AIDS (FIV).

“Once cats enter estrus, their biological instinct drives them to reproduce continuously, which makes it easy for feline AIDS to spread.”

Many pet owners may overlook this because feline AIDS is currently incurable, and it gradually weakens the cat’s immune system.

“I mention this because I once adopted a stray cat. At the time, I performed basic health checks but overlooked testing for AIDS. Unfortunately, the cat was indeed infected with feline AIDS.”

By the time I realized this, the cat had already been in contact with my other cats for nearly a month, and it had given birth to four kittens in my home, which made me very concerned about their health. I immediately arranged for all the cats in my household to undergo AIDS testing. In the end, though the situation was unfortunate, fortunately only one cat was infected with feline AIDS. I had previously posted a video of this cat, and due to its weakened immune system, it has since passed away.

Isolation and Adjustment for Cats

  1. New Cats Need to Be Isolated
A newly adopted cat must be isolated. If it’s your first cat, you need to prepare a closed and safe space where it can hide. Let the cat approach you slowly, instead of forcing it to be touched, held, or petted, as this may scare it. If you want to bond with the cat, you can attract it with treats.

“With delicious food, it will naturally come to you for affection.”
Especially for stray cats, which have experienced hunger, they crave the feeling of being full. If they have never had tasty food, once they taste something good, they will be more likely to lower their guard.

  1. Ensure Spaying/Neutering Surgery
If the cat is older than one year, make sure to arrange for spaying or neutering. Otherwise, its mating instincts may drive it to wander outside, possibly causing it to become a stray again.

Adapting to the Home Environment and Precautions

  1. Prepare Sofa Protectors
Stray cats tend to be very active, especially if you adopt a Chinese rural cat, which is known for its high energy. They may scratch your furniture, so it’s recommended to prepare a sofa protector. Choose a waterproof and tech fabric material, which is not only scratch-resistant but also prevents urine penetration. It’s an ideal choice that can be washed and reused.
  2. Prepare Cat Scratching Posts
In addition, it is essential to provide a few scratching posts for the cat.
  3. Manage Trash Bins Properly
Food waste must be properly handled, and it is advisable to use a trash bin with a lid because stray cats have a strong instinct to rummage through trash bins in search of food, which is part of their survival behavior.

Tolerance and Responsibility

Finally, please do not blame your adopted stray cat for its bad habits. These habits are deeply ingrained in its genes. We must show more tolerance, as raising a cat is a responsibility.

Your isolation tips are great! I’m curious, what’s a good isolation period before slowly introducing a new stray to resident cats?

      @CriticX感谢您!新猫隔离期通常建议至少两周,主要为确保健康及观察适应。之后可尝试隔门接触,逐步让它们熟悉彼此。具体时长还需根据猫咪个体情况调整,建议咨询专业兽医。
