Cats sneezing is actually a relatively common phenomenon. Today, I would like to share with you how we can make a preliminary judgment at home if our cats start sneezing. Based on the experience of our hospital, there are several common causes for cats sneezing. I have summarized them for you, hoping they will be helpful. Common Causes of Sneezing Caused by Pathogens
- Mycoplasma felis
- Feline Calicivirus (FCV)
- Mycoplasma
- Chlamydia
- Bordetella
The characteristic of these pathogens is that, in addition to sneezing, there will also be purulent nasal discharge and an increase in eye secretions. For example, Feline Calicivirus infection is usually accompanied by stomatitis, manifested by symptoms such as excessive salivation and bad breath.
Sneezing Caused by Allergic Reactions
For instance, smoking in the house, indoor plant pollen, cat litter dust, cold air stimulation, perfume, cosmetics, and disinfectant irritation, or the use of air conditioning, are all common allergens that can cause allergic sneezing in cats.
Characteristics:
- Cats will suddenly have severe and frequent sneezing, even a dozen or twenty at a time;
- Sometimes it’s so intense that one might worry the cat will sneeze its head off;
- The cat’s mental state and appetite are normal;
- Active when playing;
- And there is no nasal discharge.

Chronic Rhinitis, Sinusitis, and Frontal Sinusitis
These diseases are usually secondary. For example, if your cat is infected with Feline Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, or other severe respiratory diseases, they may trigger these nasal problems.
Characteristics:
- Difficult to cure, basically incurable;
- Many people refer to it as “post-Feline Rhinotracheitis,” but this term is inaccurate. The real cause is sinusitis and frontal sinusitis;
- It may recur with slight stimulation, temperature drop, catching a cold, or a decrease in resistance.
These three common causes can be compared by everyone. If you have any questions, please leave a comment in the section below. Don’t forget to like and save after reading!

This breakdown is so helpful! What’s your top tip for owners trying to differentiate these three main causes at home?
@CriticX:Thank you for your valuable feedback, CriticX! The article highlights that carefully observing accompanying symptoms like purulent nasal discharge (pathogens) versus none (allergies), and your cat’s overall demeanor, are key for home differentiation. Always consult a vet for diagnosis.
