Filial cannibalism is the behavior of pets that eat their own young during the birthing process. The filial cannibalism are complex and not fully understood. It is generally believed that it may include the following factors:
Dog:
- Mammals that are startled while giving birth may behave in ways that cause them to swallow their young, or the young may have a foul odor.
- Bitches are usually thirsty after giving birth and may devour their pups if they are not hydrated in time.
- Bitches may choose to devour smaller pups, possibly as a result of natural selection.
Please treat your dog well and allow the surviving pups to be raised well. This is the inevitable result of natural laws and external environmental influences and should not be blamed on the cruelty of the mother dog. What we need is proper knowledge and breeding methods, not just personal preferences to judge a dog’s behavior.

Cat:
- Improper feeding management during pregnancy, such as lack of protein or certain minerals in the feed, insufficient water before and after giving birth, or too high an environmental temperature, may result in the mother cat being thirsty and swallowing her cubs.
- Some mother cats may be too neurotic and over-indulge their cubs, causing them to be injured and eventually devoured by the mother.
- Swallowing cubs may be a wild instinct in cats, and female cats may develop the habit of swallowing cubs in the wild by devouring dead cubs.
To prevent litter-eating fetishism in female cats, feeding management should be strengthened to ensure that there is sufficient protein, vitamins and minerals in the feed before and after delivery, and that food rich in animal protein, such as fish, beef and pork, is provided. At the same time, ensure that the mother cat has sufficient and clean water. When giving birth, the mother cat should be carefully cared for, and the environment should be kept quiet to avoid her being frightened. For female cats with a tendency of neuroticism and litter-eating, consideration should be given to eliminating them.
Pets swallow their young from time to time for a variety of reasons. If you want your pet to reproduce offspring, please take care and be observant.
