Best Water Temperature Range and Water Change Considerations for Tetras

Tetras belong to the Characidae family and are tropical fish. The suitable water temperature range for them is between 20 to 32°C. Tetras are native to tropical regions, such as the Amazon River, and are extremely sensitive to temperature fluctuations. During their growth period, the water temperature should be maintained between 22 to 28°C and must never drop below 20°C. In colder weather, a heater stick should be placed in the aquarium to ensure stable water temperature.

Temperature Considerations During Water Changes

It is important to note that when changing water in low temperatures, you should adopt a gradual, multiple small water change method to avoid stimulating the fish with sudden changes in water temperature.

For example, in my 60 cm planted tank, I change the water two to three times a week, replacing one-third of the water each time. Each water change takes about an hour and a half, sometimes even longer. This gradual approach allows the fish to adjust to the new water, minimizing stress and avoiding harm.

The Impact of Temperature on Fish Health

Temperature is a crucial factor affecting fish growth and development. Studies have shown that excessively high temperatures shorten the fish’s lifespan, causing premature death. On the other hand, excessively low temperatures reduce the fish’s activity, weaken their immune system, and make them more susceptible to diseases.

Methods for Maintaining Stable Water Temperature

Therefore, I maintain the water temperature in my tank between 25 and 26°C. In winter, I use a heater stick, and in summer, I use a chiller to keep the temperature as stable as possible. This ensures the fish grow healthily and maintain their vibrant colors.
