When it comes to foxes, many people harbor a sense of awe and also have some stereotypes, thinking that these animals are cunning and sly, or associated with certain myths and legends.
In reality, foxes preying on rodents and pests are beneficial to humans. Although humans have domesticated foxes in the past, most of the time it was for hunting them for their fur. Nowadays, the number of wild foxes is decreasing, and they have become rare protected animals. For instance, the Tibetan fox is listed as a National Second-Class Protected Animal.
Keeping a fox is not as simple as one might think. As a pet, it requires a significant amount of time and effort. Unlike small animals like cats and dogs, foxes retain wild characteristics and have personalities that are more unpredictable. Most importantly, foxes have well-developed anal glands, and if not cleaned regularly or surgically intervened, your home may be filled with an unpleasant odor.
Moreover, do not underestimate a fox’s ability to destroy a home; its capabilities are on par with a Husky, and it might even dig holes in your floor. Although there are now domesticated foxes, their breeding is still very marginal.
