Do Dogs Need to Wear Clothes in Winter? These Double-Coated Breeds Don't Worry About the Cold

Double-Coated Dog Breeds That Don’t Need Clothes

Firstly, three representative breeds of sled dogs—Samoyeds, Huskies, and Alaskan Malamutes—have very strong cold resistance. If you dress them in clothes, they will feel very hot. Long-haired breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Shetland Sheepdogs, and German Shepherds also don’t need clothes. Additionally, double-coated breeds such as Shiba Inus and Corgis don’t need clothes either.

These breeds have a significant characteristic: they shed a lot during the change of seasons. Their cold resistance is particularly strong. If you dress them in clothes, they may feel overheated, which could lead to illness.

Single-Coated Dog Breeds That Need Clothes for Warmth

The following single-coated dog breeds need clothes to keep warm, such as French Bulldogs, Teddy Dogs, Bichon Frises, and Schnauzers. They don’t shed with the change of seasons, so their cold resistance is relatively poor. In cold weather, especially when it snows in the north, try to dress them in clothes when going out to prevent catching a cold. However, be careful not to let them wear clothes for too long to avoid skin diseases.

Great tips! I’d love to know, for single-coated breeds, what are the clearest signs they need winter clothes?

@CriticXThank you for your question! For single-coated breeds, signs they need clothes include shivering, reluctance to go outside, hunching, or cold ears/paws. Always observe your dog’s behavior in cold weather to gauge their comfort.
