Bichon Havanais (Havana Bichon Frise)

genesis

The Havana Bichon Frise did not originate from Havana, as its name implies, but from the western Mediterranean probably brought to Cuba by the Spanish. At some point in its history, the Havana Pit Bull almost disappeared from the archipelago. The breed survived thanks to smugglers who brought it to the United States, and then in the late 1980s the Havana Picasso made its way to Europe via the Netherlands.

health status

The Havanese Bichon Frise is physically robust. Nonetheless, the breed can suffer from knee disorders eye diseases or skin conditions that require special attention from owners.

Keep a regular eye on your Havanese Bichon Frise’s eye health as it may show signs of mild inflammation. There are also his ears that need attention, and if he has too much hair in his ears, you can have them trimmed The Havanese Bichon Frise eats a normal amount of food, but certain individuals can be very voracious eaters.

Practical information

As a family dog, the Havanese Bichon Frise is well socialized and gets along peacefully with humans, their own kind and cats. They love children and love to play, but they don’t go overboard.

They bark moderately and make great guard dogs.

Havanese Beagles are quiet at home but very active outside. They love to run in nature and also enjoy obstacle courses.

The Havanese Bichon Frise’s thick, long coat requires regular care (see below). The long coat prevents the dog from overheating. Even so, in the summer, some slack owners shave them off.

Breeding

Typically, a Havanese litter produces 3 to 4 puppies, but few breeders have a quality breed. In France, a total of 589 Havanese Pit Bulls were recorded in the pedigree list in 2013.

Hair care

Tools: one sparse-toothed comb, one close-toothed comb, one rubberized metal pin comb (without ball). Comb the long hair 2 to 3 times a week. Start with the paws, then the side of the body. Lay the dog on its back and groom the chest and belly. Finish with the head and tail. Use a close-toothed comb to groom the hair around the mouth and beard. Smooth out any tangles with the brush. If it is difficult to smooth, use your fingers. Make sure all the knots are out of the way with a close-toothed comb. A bath once a month is usually enough. Before each bath, remember to straighten the coat from the inside out.
